Using Religious Counseling to Reach Spiritual Enlightenment

For as long as we have records, humans have been searching for spiritual enlightenment and many through the centuries have found it. Unfortunately, in the modern world, we tend to feel we don’t have the time to spend on spiritual contemplation and other non-physical needs to reach spiritual enlightenment. What we tend to forget is that few people through history have reached spiritual enlightenment entirely on their own. Most have been guided and taught by a sage or saint.

Of course, the modern world seems to be as short on sages as it is on time. That is where religion counseling steps up to the plate. Religion counseling is counseling offered by a religious minister, or lay person with a solid grounding in religious and spiritual principles. In additional to standard counseling services, they can use the recorded teaches of sages and saints to guide people seeking spiritual enlightenment and understanding, just as the sages themselves would have done.

Religion counseling is something of a misleading term. While when offered by a minister, religion counseling is often based off of a particular religion’s teachings of beliefs. Often religion counseling has a more spiritual focus, especially when offered by a lay person or a nondenominational minister.

The spiritual focus of religion counseling can take several forms, from investigating your own spirituality, to learning about the beliefs of a religion, or variety of religions, to direct discussion of the teachings of the great sages. There are many paths to spiritual enlightenment, and an experienced counselor will know how to help you find the one best suited to you.

Keep in mind that many people seek out religion counseling to discuss and deal with problems and difficulties in their daily lives, just like secular counseling. It is a good idea to tell the counselor you are seeing that you are seeking to find spiritual enlightenment. A counselor can always help you better if he or she knows exactly what you are looking for.

Spiritual enlightenment cannot be found at random under a rock. It takes a commitment of time, effort and self examination to reach. Religion counseling can speed up the process. This happens primarily in two ways. The first is that in a religion counseling setting, the counselor normally already knows the teachings of the sages and saints. This means you don’t need to spend hours at the library digging through multiple translations of Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, or any other language, trying to find the wisdom of the ancient sages so you can learn it for yourself. The second is that, while even with the teachings of the saints and sages, everyone has to find their own path to spiritual enlightenment. A good counselor can point you in the right directions, and help you avoid wrong turns, dead ends and pit falls.

The quest for a spiritual enlightenment can be a wonderful, life changing adventure. Religion counseling can be a wonderful tool to help in that quest. And finding spiritual enlightenment can be even more wonderful when searching for it.
